Cognizance is an annual technical festival held at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.The annual technical extravaganza of IIT Roorkee, Cognizance is galore of intellectually stimulating events held over 3 days which include Robotics, Innovation of the Year, Industrial Challenges, Design competitions, Gaming contests, Workshops, Guest Lectures. It subscribes to the basic idea of innovating for the future and serves as a perfect platform for participants to exploit their talents and skills to the best.

Cognizance has events spanning all the fields of engineering. Workshops on Maya Animation and Cryptography are also scheduled for the fest. Series of guest lectures and panel discussions on topics like Computer Security, ethical hacking, code breaking and so on will also be organised as part of the fest. “Ideaz” is the event which caters to the needs of the students interested in Research. The event involves paper presentations.

Corpostrat’08, the grand B-plan contest aims to capture the imaginations of the young and vibrant brains of the country and helps to convert their finest ideas into a real-time venture through guided channels. This event presents the ultimate challenge of converting an innovation into a workable business proposition. The contest will encourage the aspiring entrepreneurs to think unconventionally and come up with plans that will have a significant impact on the world. The event will unfold in three stages. The first two stages will be conducted online. In the third stage, the finalists will be invited to the sprawling campus of IIT Roorkee to present their Business Plans in front of panels of distinguished judges from Industry and Academia.The engineering geniuses and geeks of the country unite as the best of the best put their mettle to test in large scale events specific to each department. This involves a long term problem or a project announced publicly before Cognizance. The crème de la crème entries are selected and the winners are grandly awarded.
The problem will be so designed as to add value to society and the institute. Problems like disaster mitigation, design of recreational activity center, wheel chair for disabled, software development, design of cooling plants etc.

There are five categories which can really pump your adrenalin and make you a real master. These are :

1. Mathematics : This is an online maths quiz. The questions will be of very basic and fundamental level, just based on tricks and concepts that you have mastered at your school level. Lets see how elegantly you can apply them here.
2. General Knowledge: Reminiscence of your school? Well, here we come up with a general knowledge quiz for you (I am sure you must have really enjoyed these during school days). But its different from that!!! It’s an online quiz…so I am sure its going to turn out into a real humdinger of a quiz…Get Set n Vrrooomm! The questions will comprise of general sections like sports, politics, current affairs, who’s who and all that stuff of which I am sure you are very much aware of. Ahh wait. I just forgot to ask you one question. Who was the first American to win the Nobel Prize in Economics? Do come back with an answer.

3. Engineering: All you engineers, its time for you to roll on. Just show your mettle and win the medal. This online event will have questions from general engineering subject that we the engineers study during our course. No special emphasis will be given to a particular branch – questions from every branch with equal respect. So you budding technocrats, what are you waiting for?? Come and join the engineers troop.
4. Programming: Now this is something intriguing. All you guys want to try your luck out in this. No problems at all !! This event is going to test your programming skills and the reward….a bagful of prizes and cash!! Phew! Questions mainly from C++ and Java programming language are going to trouble you. Lets see if you are able to crack the nut or you find it a hard nut to crack. Its going to be a good break for all you budding programmers and dilettantes.
* Hacking: Did I hear ethical? No ways..I just heard Hacking and nothing else. Its for you guys! You take pride in calling yourself hackers?? If so then you are at the right place. We also want to see how great a hacker thou art. All you have to fo is to Hack and win the Jack…o I mean Jackpot!! So this online event is all set to bring out the real hacker in you. Be ready you hackers!!
