National Conference on Diabetes Mellitus and Cancer Dia-Can 2009 – Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology
Introduction: This is our immense pleasure to invite you all to attend the National Conference on Diabetes mellitus and Cancer organised by the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology on 19th and 20th December 2009. Diabetes mellitus, a leading metabolic disorder worldwide, has significant impact on health, quality of life and life expectancy of patients. Reasons for tremendous increase in the number of diabetic patients in India include increasing number of ageing population, sedentary life style and physical inactivity. Cancer is the major health problem worldwide and one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in children and adults. The incidence and death rate due to cancer in India will rise by the factor of 3 between the years 1991 and 2025 simply as a function of ageing and life style modifications.
About DBB: The Department of Biochemistry in Annamalai University was started in the year 1994. Since then department has made rapid strides in both teaching and research activities. The department runs 2-year M.Sc. Biochemistry and 2-year M.Sc. Biotechnology (2009 onwards), and 5-year Integrated M.Sc. Biotechnology (2002 onwards) courses in addition to M.Phil & Ph.D programmes. The major areas of research in the department include cancer chemoprevention, molecular oncology, diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases, hepatotoxicity, chrono-oncology and chronobiology. The members of the teaching staff have earned academic distinctions and awards and have received research grants from several national as well as international funding agencies. The department has signed memoranda of understanding with Johns Hopkins University, USA and National University of Singapore, Singapore and Mitsui Norin Co. Ltd., Japan. It has also exchange programme with the University of Connecticut medical centre USA. Taking into consideration its all around progress the Department of Science and Technology recognized the Department for FIST funding. The UGC also, appreciating its contribution and growth, sanctioned the Department Special assistance programme.

Recent trends in diabetes and cancer.
Molecular and biochemical markers of diabetes mellitus and cancer.
Preventive strategies for cancer and diabetes mellitus.
Role of free radicals and antioxidants in cancer and diabetes mellitus.
Call For Papers: Research papers of original contribution are invited for oral presentation in the conference.
Paper Submission: Authors are invited to send the soft copy of the abstract of their research work not exceeding 200 words in MS-word format. Soft copy should be sent to diacan@rediffmail.com. The abstract should have title, authors name and affiliations, full address for corresponding including fax, phone/mobile and e-mail.

Registration: Delegates are requested to send their registration fee as Demand Draft for Rs.400 /- drawn in favour of “The Registrar, Annamalai University”, payable at Annamalainagar along with their abstract and registration form. Accommodation is Rs.50/-per day for students and Rs.100 /-per day for others.
