Introduction : The Australian Development Scholarships program is part of the Australia Awards initiative announced by the Australian Prime Minister in November 2009. The Australia Awards have been established to maximise the benefit to Australia of its extensive scholarship programs, and to support enduring ties between Australia and our neighbours. The Australia Awards will bring together the international development awards administered by AusAID and the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations’ Endeavour Awards under a single recognisable brand. Australian Development Scholarships is the principal mechanism by which Australia provides scholarship assistance for individuals from developing countries to undertake studies at Australian education institutions.

In Pakistan, the program aims to improve sustainable, pro-poor service delivery and governance. It has been redesigned in consultation with the Government of Pakistan to increasingly align its objectives with Pakistan’s development priorities. Future awards will focus in particular on the following priority sectors: maternal, neonatal and child health services basic education services rural development and food security governance. The program also targets public sector reform and improved standards of governance in both public and private sectors. The aim is to improve technical and leadership capacity of men and women working in federal and provincial governments, non-profit civil society, and the private sector. Priority will be given to applicants from Baluchistan, Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), formerly the Northwest Frontier Province.

Eligibility : Applicants must meet all of the ADS’s general eligibility criteria. These include:

be Pakistani citizens (dual nationals are not eligible); be currently residing in Pakistan; not have applied for permanent residency in Australia or New Zealand; not be married or engaged to a person who is eligible to hold Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residence; satisfy Australian Government requirements for international student visas for entry to Australia (heath, character etc.); be able to clear a Police Security Clearance conducted by a third party on behalf of AusAID; not hold another scholarship; not have held a foreign scholarship in the 24 months preceding the application (24 months are calculated from the date of arrival back in Pakistan to the closing date for applications); be applying to commence a new course of study and not be seeking support for a course already commenced in Australia (on-going study programs will not be supported); be able to take up the scholarship in the year for which it is offered; have outlined a case that is clear about their objectives and motivation to make a contribution to development in Pakistan; be not more than 45 years of age at the time of application. have completed 16 years of education;

Benefits : ADS are offered for the period required for the individual to complete the academic program specified by the Australian higher education Institution, including any preparatory training.

English Language Test : All applicants must undertake an English language test (IELTS). The result of the IELTS test  will be forwarded to the university during the placement process.   Your level of English must be equivalent to an average IELTS level of 6.5 with no band less than 6. Applicants under Scholar Profile 4 have to submit an overall IELTS score of 7.0 with no band less than 6. AusAID will also facilitate IELTS testing for awardees (Profile 1,2 & 3), who have clearly demonstrated their ability to reach an IELTS score of 6.5 with no band less than 6 during the application and interview process. Once you achieve the English Language score of 6.5 with no band less than 6, you will still need to meet English language requirements for entry into the proposed university; and obtain a visa from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, (international applicants only).

How to Apply : Each applicant has to submit three original sets of the Application Form and one Self Assessment form along with the required documents presented neatly and professionally on A4 paper, vertically secured together in the following order: beginning with the self assessment form; three passport sized photos; application form; attested copy of IELTS score sheet (if available for profile 1,2 & 3, but mandatory for profile 4 applicants). A test result obtained anytime after January 2010 will be considered current; attested copies of academic qualifications (both sides of all degrees and all transcripts should be copied); attested copies of Employment letters specifying years of service and job description (for all years of employment NOT employment contract); attested copy of passport and attested copy of National Identity Card; and all Master applicants whose study program will include at least 50 percent research MUST attach an outline of the proposed research project (up to 1,000 words) to each application form.
