About the Course
a) The Rationale
During the past few years, there has been a visible change in the approach of the Government in solving the problems of rural poverty through development blocks and anti-poverty programmes. Through the 73rd and 74th amendments to the Constitution of India in 1993, and other administrative measures, it has handed over resources and decision-making powers to the Panchayats and to the people (Gram Sabhas).
In this context, the people need to be escorted at least for some time by qualified men and women, such as, our MBA-RM students, who are familiar with the newly acquired powers and responsibilities of the people. They also need to be helped to acquire skills to use properly the resources entrusted to them, for the welfare of all in their villages. Only then, will this experiment or approach succeed.
The MBA-RM students are trained in different fields and they are capable of handling human resource development, rural projects, rural banks, rehabilitation projects, etc. Besides, they are capable of interfacing between industries, power plants and mines and interacting with local inhabitants, displaced from their original villages. They also learn the art of facilitating rural industries, marketing federations, forest protection units, etc.
b) The Framework
The two-year course seeks to weave a strong professional discipline out of three strands:
1) A management strand with the eight subjects associated with the discipline of management: Accounts and Finance, Marketing, Organizational Behavior and HRD, Computers and Information Systems, Social and Economic Analysis, Basic Quantitative Techniques, Organization Policies and Strategic Management, Concepts and Values of Human and Social Development;
2) A thorough grasp of the rural reality and mastery of the tools to understand it, through exposure, direct involvement in rural development programmes and activities, and regular interaction with the rural people;
3) Skills and techniques to handle rural changes in such a manner that the rural people are brought to the stage where they grow into managers of their own resources. At the same time, since the true rural managers are the rural people themselves, the students are being trained to function as facilitators of this process, rather than as its managers.
c) The Objectives
The cardinal objective of offering the MBA (RM) is to mould rural development facilitators, trained at the professional level to penetrate the locus where problems rage and to assist the rural people to become capable managers of their own resources and environment. The students who have undergone the MBA (RM) course should also be able to apply the newly acquired knowledge and skills in a creative way in various rural development programmes and activities. In other words, the rural facilitators – MBA-RM students — are expected to be multi-faceted innovators.
Additional Opportunities
a) Participation in Short Training Programmes: Every year XIDAS conducts a series of short training programmes. The students of MBA-RM are given opportunities to participate in some of these training programmes, provided these do not clash with the regular programme.
b) Participation in Survey Work: XIDAS undertakes different survey works in rural or urban areas. When such programmes are undertaken, the students may also be given the opportunity to participate in such an exercise, which will be highly beneficial to the students themselves. The time so spent in such exercises will be counted as part of the course, as per the guidelines worked out for this purpose.
c) Involvement in Field Work: XIDAS has several ongoing fieldwork projects and periodically the students of MBA-RM may be invited to participate in these programmes, in order to give them the opportunity to learn about different types of fieldwork. Some such involvement may be compulsory, while the others may be optional, as determined by the Management.
d) Participation in Field Training Programmes: XIDAS has planned to introduce a mobile training unit, which will be going to different rural areas to offer on the spot training programmes to the grassroots level people, to the local NGOs and field workers. The students of MBA-RM will be given the opportunity to join this mobile training team, at least for a few days in a year, just to get an experience of such a programme and to learn more about the situation in the rural areas.
Employment and Other Opportunities
The task for which the MBA (RM) prepares students is not an easy one and the course is not likely to appeal to the average MBA candidate, but only to young women or men who feel that work is a mission, a calling rather than merely a career. Moreover, the salary prospects in rural areas may be lower than for a general MBA holder in an industrial or business organization. Nevertheless, XIDAS is convinced that the future of India is being decided to a great extent in the rural areas.
On successful completion of their studies, the outgoing students of MBA (RM) will be absorbed in NGOs, Development Agencies, Government Services and Commercial Organizations, through a systematic placement procedure of the Institute. Further, the students who obtain the MBA Degree from XIDAS will have the added opportunity to go for higher studies, such as, M. Phil or Ph D, in this or other related fields.
